A game was held between the Bisons and the Acadia Axemen hockey team. This game was to launch the Kings Adopt-a-Library literacy program which promotes and encourages kids to read. Recent statistical data advises that 65% of current prisons have inmates who are illiterate or have literacy issues. Many police officers have dealt with clients either witnesses or suspects who were unable to read well or even write.
This program encourages kids at a young age to read books and rewards them by providing incentives and rewards for the number of books they read and puts them in competition with other schools much like sports teams competing for a prize.
Darren Burns, Coach of the Acadia Axemen hockey team recognized the value of having his players support this initiative. The program was launched on Nov 5th, 2007 with the benefit hockey game which pitted the Acadia team against the RCMP NS Wolfpack hockey team comprised of serving members of the RCMP across the province who had previous Jr hockey experience. Other participants were minor hockey players who provided between period entertainment. After several antics as a result of an RCMP supplied referee and a shoot out the final score resulted in a tie.
Many prizes were given out those in attendance and several dignitaries were on hand such as Mr Norm Dray, Valley Regional School Board Superintendent, Brian Heaney with Acadia University, Inspector Dave Brown Officer in charge of Kings District RCMP and Cst John Kennedy, RCMP Adopt a Library Coordinator for Nova Scotia. Approx $1,000 was raised from ticket sales some of which will go towards the purchase of an annual trophy to be awarded to the school with the most books read by its students. The benefit hockey game will be an annual event with proceeds towards the Kings Adopt a Library program and Crime Prevention initiatives in Kings County.

The WolfPack/Bisons played the Acadia Axemen to a 7-7 tie and raised $1,000.00 for New Minas Adopt a Library Literacy program.
